Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement: The Chandler Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Amarr-compatible cable and drum replacements throughout Chandler, with most jobs completed same-day at an installed price of $130-$250 per cable assembly, including the drum. You’ll know this part has failed when the door hangs uneven, jerks on the way up, or you spot a frayed cable dangling near the track. In Chandler’s dry heat, cables don’t rust out the way they do back east - they fray from repeated torsion cycles and let go when you least expect it, usually at the bottom of the travel where the load peaks.

Which Amarr Models This Applies To

Amarr builds doors under three main lines: the Classica (steel, mid-tier, most common in Chandler subdivisions), the Heritage (insulated steel, heavier), and the Oak Summit / Hillcrest carriage-house styles. The cable and drum aren’t one-size-fits-all across these lines. What matters is the door’s height and the cable length - a 7-foot Classica 3000 uses a different cable than an 8-foot Heritage 5000, and the drum diameter changes with the spring system’s lift requirements. The part label inside the door jamb lists the series and build date; off the top we can usually match it by measuring the old cable’s length and wire diameter, which on Amarr residential doors runs 3/32-inch or 1/8-inch aircraft-grade steel. For Amarr specifically, OEM parts are well-made and we recommend them when they’re available at a sane price, but quality aftermarket cables from a U.S. manufacturer meet or exceed the same spec. The drum is where OEM matters more: Amarr drums are engineered with specific taper profiles to pair with their torsion spring lifts, and a mismatched aftermarket drum changes the cable wrap geometry. We’ve seen that go wrong in Ocotillo more than once. Servo Garage Doors Chandler is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Amarr - we stock OEM and quality equivalents and we’ll tell you which we’re quoting and why.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • Frayed or unraveling cable strands near the drum. The cable wraps and unwraps around the drum on every cycle; eventually individual strands break near the crimped end, which is the highest-wear point. Once you see three or four broken strands, the cable is near failure.
  • The door hangs crooked or binds on one side. A cable that has jumped the drum or stretched unevenly lets one side of the door travel faster than the other. You’ll hear the difference before you see it: a grinding, uneven pull.
  • A visible gap between the cable and the drum groove. The cable should seat flush in the drum’s groove. When the drum wears or the cable stretches, it rides up onto the drum wall, which chews through the cable fast.
  • The door slams or drops a few inches when closing. That’s the cable going slack for a split second - the drum isn’t taking up cable at the right rate. This is a tension problem, often a signal the drum and spring aren’t synced.
  • You find a snapped cable on the floor of the garage. Not subtle. Here’s the thing: a snapped cable usually means the door was running with an underlying spring or drum problem for weeks, maybe months. Replacing the cable alone without checking the drum and spring balance is how you end up with a second snapped cable in six weeks.

One cable snapping isn’t the end of the world, but it’s not a minor annoyance either. The door is now carrying uneven load on one side, which stresses the other cable, the drum, and the door panels themselves. If you hear a cable snap in Chandler at 6 a.m. on a Monday, don’t run the door again. Call us, and we’ll tell you over the phone what to expect before we send a truck.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Chandler, an Amarr-compatible cable and drum replacement runs $130-$250 installed, including the parts, the labor, and a written scope of work before anything gets unbolted. Where you land in that range depends mainly on whether you need a single cable, both cables, or cables plus a drum. A single cable with a standard drum tends toward the lower end; replacing both cables and one or both drums, or matching a tapered Amarr drum to a specific torsion spring system, lands higher.

What’s included: we quote a flat written price before any work starts - that’s Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, not a courtesy. The price covers the parts, the install, a balance check, and a full cycle test. You also get a documented photo record of the failed part before we remove it, and the completed work after. Clause 4 is the reason we photograph the failed component before quoting a replacement - you see what we saw, no narration required. If the part we pull doesn’t match the failure we quoted, you’ll see that too, and we stop and re-quote before proceeding.

DIY or Call Us?

Cables and drums live under the same tension as the torsion springs. That’s a serious amount of stored energy - more than enough to lose fingers or worse if the wrong move is made under load. We don’t recommend DIY cable or drum replacement on any torsion-spring Amarr door, full stop. What you can safely do: visually inspect the cables, look for fraying, and note whether the door is level at the midpoint. Beyond that, leave it to a trained tech.

We’ll tell you the range over the phone, and the tech who shows up will be background-checked, uniformed, and ready to quote before touching a fastener.
